Hello, Formware fans! I just updated Formware and my automated support profiles aren’t playing nicely. Frankly, they look gross and have far more intersections than they had before. Below are some images that show the problem. Dozens of support nodes can appear in a small spot at times, and place supports within supports. Has anyone else experienced this?
Automated supports look gross and cross through/into model
Hi,
First of all; it’s never flawless. It’s a trade off between speed , accuracy, and adding vs not adding of supports.
You can calculate everything mathematically exact, but then it will be to slow to use for users with 300mb STLs
We’ve rewritten a lot of the past years to improve speed. Took different calculation routes. But it’s not always good. agree there.
What can you do? It looks to me like the diameter of your columns are a bit large compared to your model. The model has relatively a lot of detail.
So I would take a small tip size and main diameter, if your material/process allows.
That basically makes the calculation more accurate. Because you give the ‘algoritm’ more freedom to try alternative orientations. They have a smaller chance of intersecting.
In the end; you will always have to do some manual editting/dragging.
We are working on it improving/revising it over and over again. Sometimes with a few months pause as other parts need attention as well.
kind regards
Elco
One thing I’ve noticed is that auto supports may behave (more) strangely if there are errors in the model. I check, and repair if necessary, before generating supports.
