Am i doing this right?
Generate Autosupports
Select a support to delete
Ctrl Del to delete the entire selected support
All supports are deleted
If I have added single supports manually and use Ctrl Del the entire single selected support is correctly deleted

Yes it’s working correctly.
If you autogenerate with the default lattice structure (split lattice), then it’s all in 1 support object. (see the part list for this).
ctrl+del will delete the support object entirely.
If you want to remove a branch there is currently no option for it other than select the subparts and delete.
